University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is a public historically black land-grant research university in Princess Anne, Maryland. It is part of the University System of Maryland and is classified among R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity.

History

In 1886, the Delaware Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church opened the school as a preparatory school for the private Centenary Biblical Institute in Baltimore. Four years later, it changed its name to Morgan College. Finally, in 1970, it became the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Present-day, the university is one of twelve University System of Maryland public institutions of higher education.

Academics & Campus

The 745-acre campus is in Princess Anne. Additionally, UMES operates a research farm in southern Somerset County and the Paul S. Sarbanes Coastal Ecology Center near Assateague Island.

The university consists of five schools: School of Graduate Studies; School of Pharmacy and Health Professions; School of Business and Technology; School of Education, Social Sciences, and the Arts; and School of Agricultural and Natural Sciences.

UMES provides 37 undergraduate areas of study, 15 master's degrees, and eight doctoral degree programs. As of Fall 2019, there are 2,333 undergrads and 553 postgraduates.

Athletics -Hawks

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is one of the founding members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference since 1970.

The Hawks athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, bowling, cross country, golf, indoor/outdoor track, softball, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, and indoor/outdoor track.

UMES used to be a powerhouse in black college football and produced five undefeated seasons from 1947-1960. The university is tied with Florida State for the most alumni appearing in a single Super Bowl game. In Super Bowl III, there were four alumni: Charlie Stukes, Earl Christy, Emerson Boozer, and Johnny Sample. Go Maroon & Gray!
