The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) is a public university in Duluth, Minnesota. It belongs in the University of Minnesota system.

History

In the 1890s, the state legislature made plans for a women's teaching school, and the bill was passed in 1895 for the State Normal School of Duluth. In the 1940s, enrollment increased at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus.

City leaders and area state legislators submitted to the legislature their plans to establish a branch campus of the University of Minnesota in Duluth. The Duluth State Teachers College was then removed from the Minnesota State Teachers College, and in 1947, the bill was passed for the university's branch campus.

Academics & Campus

The 244-acre campus overlooks Lake Superior and comprises 50 buildings. UMD has the following colleges and schools: College of Pharmacy, Medical School, Graduate School, Swenson College of Science and Engineering, Labovitz School of Business and Economics, College of Liberal Arts, and College of Education & Human Service Professions.

The university offers 16 bachelor's degrees in 87 majors, graduate programs in 24 areas, a four-year College of Pharmacy program, and a two-year program at the School of Medicine. The university enrolls 11,000 students each year.

UMD students have several fraternities and sororities that they can join. The sororities are Alpha Sigma Tau, Beta Lambda Psi, Gamma Sigma Sigma, and Phi Sigma Sigma. The fraternities include Alpha Delta, Alpha Nu Omega, Phi Kappa Psi, Phi Kappa Tau, and Tau Kappa Epsilon.

Athletics -Bulldogs

The sports teams compete at the NCAA Division II level in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The men's ice hockey program participates in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. The women's hockey program plays in the Division I Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

The Bulldogs athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, hockey, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, hockey, and track & field.

In 2008, the football team won the NCAA Division II National Football Championship, the first Division II championship at the school. They won their second championship in 2010. Go Maroon & Gold!
