The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is a public university in Baltimore, Maryland. It is the original campus of the University System of Maryland. In 2020, the Pharmacy School was ranked 14^th by the U.S. News & World Report.

History

In 1807, the Maryland College of Medicine was established. It was re-chartered in 1812 as the University of Maryland and was granted the authority to establish law, divinity, and arts & sciences faculties. In 1988, the school merged with the State University and College System to form the new University System of Maryland.

Academics & Campus

The campus is located near Camden Yards, the Baltimore Convention Center, and Lexington Market. UMB also has a partnership with the University of Maryland, College Park which is part of the University System of Maryland. It is located on the west side of downtown Baltimore with a 71-acre campus.

The university comprises 58 buildings, including six professional schools and a Graduate School. UMB has some of the oldest professional schools of social work, pharmacy, nursing, medicine, law, and dentistry. It is the only human services, law, and public health university in the state.

The University of Maryland provides 80 baccalaureates, doctoral, certificate, and master's programs. The majority of the state's professional practice doctoral degrees are awarded at the university. There are 7,100 students enrolled.

Athletics -Retrievers

The sports teams compete as members of the NCAA Division I America East Conference.

The Retrievers athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, track & field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, and track & field.

In 2018, the men's basketball team defeated the #1 ranked Virginia Cavaliers in the NCAA men's basketball tournament. This was the first time a 16-seed defeated a 1-seed in the tournament out of 135 previous matchups. Go Red, Gold, & Black!
