The University of Maine (UMO) is a public land-grant research university in Orono, Maine. It is the flagship university of the University of Maine System and is classified among “R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity.” In addition, UMaine is one of sixteen institutions listed in Princeton Review’s “Green Honor Roll.”

History 

As a function of the Morrill Act, the Maine State College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts was founded in 1865. The college officially opened in 1868 and, in 1897, changed its name to the University of Maine.

Academics & Campus

The 660-acre campus is situated on Marsh Island, between the Stillwater and Penobscot rivers. UMO is the only U.S. land-grant university on an island, apart from the University of Hawai’i. In total, the university comprises 37 academic buildings, 30 administrative buildings, 18 residence halls, eighteen specific laboratory facilities, ten sports facilities, and over 30 more buildings.

Within its five colleges, UMaine provides 90+ undergraduate majors and is home to one of the nation’s oldest honors programs. In addition, it is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education.

The University of Maine is the largest university in the state, with an enrollment of roughly 11,500 students. It is home to fourteen Greek life sororities and fraternities. UMO is also the birthplace of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society.

Athletics – Black Bears

The sports teams are members of the America East Conference. The football team participates in the Colonial Athletic Association, and the ice hockey teams compete in Hockey East.

The Black Bears athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, field hockey, ice hockey, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, and track & field.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, ice hockey, swimming & diving, and track & field.

The men’s ice hockey team has won two national championships, and the baseball team has appeared in seven College World Series. Go Black Bears!
