University of California, Santa Barbara, is a public land-grant research university and belongs to the University of California system. It is classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities—Very high research activity.” UCSB is also home to inspiring faculty, some of which are Nobel Prize laureates. In 2016, Forbes magazine ranked the university 114th in the nation and 50th for best research university.

 

History 

Following its origins back to the year 1891, UCSB was a self-sufficient teachers' school that offered training in home economics and industrial arts. It didn’t join the University of California system until 1944. In 1995, it was elected to the Association of American Universities.
 

Academics & Campus 
The University of California, Santa Barbara, is classified into 5 colleges and schools, and offers 87 undergraduate degrees and 55 graduate degrees. According to U.S. News & World Report, the university is rated as “most selective” in terms of admission. UCSB mainly prioritizes its research and chooses academic development over vocational learning. It is named a Hispanic-Serving Institution by the Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities.

The campus is the sixth-largest in the UCS with 18,000+ undergraduates and 3,000+ graduates enrolled. Located on the cliffs directly above the Pacific Ocean, the campus is divided into 4 parts: The Main Campus, Storke Campus, West Campus, and North Campus. They all surround the unincorporated community of Isla Vista. It is one of a few universities in the U.S. with its own beach, miles of coastline, lagoon, and the rocky extension called Goleta Point.

Athletics – The Gauchos

UCSB’s sports teams compete in the Big West Conference. This excludes the men’s water polo, men’s and women’s swimming, and the men’s volleyball teams, which are in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

The Gauchos’ intercollegiate athletics program includes:

Women- basketball, softball, swimming, track and field, cross country, soccer, volleyball, tennis, and water polo. 

 

Men- basketball, baseball, swimming, track and field, cross country, volleyball, soccer, tennis, golf, and water polo.

 

The Gauchos is best known for its men’s swimming and soccer teams. In 2006, the men’s soccer team won its first NCAA soccer title and its second overall NCAA championship. Go Blue & Gold!
