What is the History of the University of California Santa Barbara?

Following its origins back to the year 1891, UCSB was a self-sufficient teachers' school that offered training in home economics and industrial arts. It didn't join the University of California system until 1944. In 1995, it was elected to the Association of American Universities.

Which NCAA Sports Do the Gauchos Play?

UCSB's sports teams compete in the Big West Conference. This excludes the men's water polo, men's and women's swimming, and the men's volleyball teams, which are in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

The Gauchos' intercollegiate athletics program includes:

Women- basketball, softball, swimming, track and field, cross country, soccer, volleyball, tennis, and water polo.

Men- basketball, baseball, swimming, track and field, cross country, volleyball, soccer, tennis, golf, and water polo.

The Gauchos is best known for its men's swimming and soccer teams. In 2006, the men's soccer team won its first NCAA soccer title and its second overall NCAA championship. Go Blue & Gold!
