Tuskegee University is a private, historically black land-grant university in Tuskegee, Alabama. According to the 2021 U.S. News & World Report, Tuskegee was placed 4^th out of 79 HBCUs.

History

In 1881, Tuskegee Normal School for Colored Teachers was founded following the 1880 elections in Macon County between former Confederate Colonel, W.F. Foster and local Black Leader, Lewis Adams. A teachers' school was the dream of a former slaveholder, George W. Campbell, and former slave, Lewis Adams. In 1965, it was declared a National Historic Landmark for its role in higher education for African Americans and how it impacted U.S. history. In 1985, the institution achieved university status and was renamed Tuskegee University.

Academics & Campus

On its campus, the academic programs are taught in five colleges and two schools. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Tuskegee offers 40 bachelor's degrees, 17 master's degrees, four doctoral degrees, a five-year accredited professional degree program in architecture, and the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. There are almost 3,000 students enrolled, representing all of the U.S. and 30+ countries.

Athletics –Golden Tigers

The sports teams at Tuskegee are members of the NCAA Division II and compete within the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Golden Tigers' athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross-country, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, tennis, and track and field.

In 2014, the men's basketball team won the SIAC Championship and NCAA Division South Region Championship. The softball team also won the 2014 SIAC Championship. The football team has the most wins in SIAC history, with 29 SIAC championships. Go Crimson & Gold!
