The State University of New York at Stony Brook or Stony Brook University (SBU) is a public research university in Stony Brook, New York. It is one of four university centers of the SUNY system and the largest public university in the state. SBU is classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities—Very high research activity”.

A philanthropist and businessman from the Three Village area, Ward Melville, donated 400+ acres of land to the state to develop a university. State University College on Long Island was founded in 1957 in Oyster Bay and moved to Stony Brook in 1962. The school was founded by the governor and state of New York as a college to prepare secondary school teachers. In 2005, the school was officially renamed Stony Brook University.

Academics & Campus

SBU’s main campus is in the north shore hamlet of Stony Brook near Long Island and roughly 50 miles east of Manhattan. The campus covers more than 1,454 acres of land and comprises 213 buildings. There is a Manhattan Campus and additional satellite campuses in Southampton and South Korea. SBU is also in partnership with Battelle, operates Brookhaven National Laboratory and a Research & Development Park, and has four business incubators in the region.

The university has twelve schools and colleges, with the largest school being the College of Arts and Science. In 2001, SUNY Stony Brook was a member of the larger Universities Research Association and was elected to the Association of American Universities in 2001. In addition, it was one of ten national universities awarded a National Science Foundation recognition award in 1998.

Stony Brook University enrolled 26,814 students representing all U.S. states. 15% of the population are international students from 100+ countries. Almost 300 recognized student clubs and organizations are on campus including sororities and fraternities. SBU is tied for having the seventh-most Fields Medalists among U.S. universities.
