Stephen F. Austin (SFA) is a public university in Nacogdoches, Texas. It is authorized by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

History

In 1923, it was established as a teachers' college due to the enactment authored by State Senator Wilfred Roy Cousins Sr. The university was subsequently renamed after Stephen F. Austin, one of Texas's founding fathers. Its school remains on the property of Thomas Jefferson Rusk. Stephen F. Austin is one of four self-governing federal colleges in Texas.

Academics & Campus

Stephen F. Austin State University is located in the rural East Texas college town of Nacogdoches. The main campus encompasses 430 acres along with a 642-acre agricultural research center, swine production, an equine center, a 2,650-acre experimental forest, and a 25.3-acre forestry field station. Through its six colleges and one independent school, SFA offers over 120 areas of study, including 80+ undergraduate majors, almost 60 graduate degrees, and three doctoral programs. The student body represents 46 states outside Texas and 42 foreign countries.

Athletics –Lumberjacks

The sports teams are members of the Southland Conference. The male student-athletes are called Lumberjacks, and female student-athletes are known as Ladyjacks.

The Lumberjacks' athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, beach volleyball, bowling, cross-country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, and track and field.

SFA won a total of three team national championships and four individual national championships. In 2009, the men's basketball team reached its first-ever NCAA tournament. Go Purple & White!
