St. John’s University is a large private research, Catholic university under Saint John the Baptist's patronage. It is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education with 13 specialized accreditations. According to the 2021 U.S. News & World Report ranking of “National Universities,” St. John’s undergraduate program was tied for 170th.

History

The school was founded in 1870 by the Vincentian Fathers of the Roman Catholic Church. The first Bishop of Brooklyn, John Loughlin, wanted to provide the underprivileged youth with an intellectual and moral education. After St. John’s built a law school in 1925, other graduates and undergraduate schools were built until it eventually became a university in 1933. It was praised for accepting Jews with low household income in the 1962 publication of Time Magazine.
