Southern University and A&M College (Southern, SUBR, or SU) is a public historically black land-grant university in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It is the largest HBCU in the state and the flagship institution of the Southern University System.

History

In 1879, at the Louisiana State Constitutional Convention, African American political leaders proposed the idea of founding a higher education institution for the education of persons of color. A year later, the Louisiana General Assembly chartered Southern University for Colored Students. It opened its doors on March 7, 1881.

Academics & Campus

The campus encompasses 512 acres, plus an agricultural experimental station on a 372-acre site. It is also a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Southern University owns eight on-campus residence halls, six degree-granting colleges, and a law school. The Southern University Law Center is one of only two public law schools in the state of Louisiana. Southern is also the only HBCU and one of six public universities in the state with an engineering program. 85% of its students are from Louisiana, 199 students represent foreign countries, and roughly 90% of students identify as black. Southern University has almost 150 student organizations on campus.

Athletics –Jaguars

The sports teams are members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference in NCAA Division I.

The Jaguars' athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, bowling, cross-country, cheerleading, softball, soccer, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross-country, football, and track and field.

The baseball team has won more regular-season championships than any other member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. In 2005-2006, the women's basketball team won both the SWAC regular-season title and won the SWAC tournament. Go Blue & Gold!
