Academics & Campus

SMU's campus is located in Highland Park and University Park, Dallas County, Texas. It covers 234 acres of land, west of US Route 75. There are also satellite campuses in Plano, Texas, and Taos, New Mexico. Southern Methodist has eight degree-granting schools and offers a reliable foundation in the undergrad and graduate programs such as humanities and sciences, and professional degree programs. In 2020, the university granted more than 3,827 degrees which included 315 doctorates, 1,659 masters, and 1,853 bachelor's, as well as offers over 32 doctoral and 120+ masters programs.

The school was founded in 1911 by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, which now belongs to the United Methodist Church. During this time, church leaders saw that there was a need for a Methodist institution located in a metropolitan area. It was nonsectarian in its teaching and enrolled students regardless of their religious affiliations.

Which NCAA Sports Do the Mustangs Play?

The Mustangs were founded in 1911 and joined the Southwest Conference. Present day, the athletic teams participate in the NCAA Division I (FBS) as a member of the American Athletic Conference.

The Mustangs' athletics program includes basketball (M+W), cross country, equestrian, football, golf (M+W), rowing, soccer (M+W), swimming and diving (M+W), tennis (M+W), track and field, and volleyball.

Southern Methodist University played in three National Championships in football. The Mustangs have also played in 15 Bowl Games, one appearance in the Rose Bowl, and four appearances in the Cotton Bowl Classic. In men's basketball, they appeared in one Final Four and 14 Southwest Conference Championships.
