Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU) is a public university in Hammond, Louisiana. It is the largest university in the state.

History

In 1925, Linus A. Sims founded Hammond Junior College to meet the needs of southeast Louisiana and the Florida parishes. He moved the campus in 1928 to north Hammond, and the school became Southeastern Louisiana College. It was adopted into the state educational system with the State Board of Education in control. Southeastern Louisiana University gained university status in 1970.

Academics & Campus

Whereas the man campus is located in Tangipahoa Parish, there are other campuses in Baton Rouge, Walker, and Manchac. Consisting of five colleges and 18 academic departments, Southeastern provides 60+ degree programs. In 2005, SLU became a doctoral-granting institution.

The university was the first institution in Louisiana to achieve AACSB's accreditation in accounting. It is also accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In the 1990s, SLU was one of the fastest-growing colleges in the nation.

In the fall of 2019, 14,298 students were enrolled. Students are involved in major campus media and publications like ByLion weekly online publication, Lion's Roar newspaper, KSLU radio station, the Southeastern Channel public access TV channel, and many more. Famous alumni at the school are Amir Abdur-Rahim, Bill Evans, Kayla Ard, Robert Alford, amongst others.

Athletics -Lions & Lady Lions

The sports teams participate in NCAA Division (FCS) in the Southland Conference.

The Lions athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, beach volleyball, cheerleading, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, beach volleyball, cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, track & field, and volleyball. Go Green & Gold!
