About San Jose State University Spartans

San Jose; State University (San Jose State or SJSU) is a public university in San Jose, California. It is the oldest state university on the West Coast and the founding campus of the California State University system. SJSU is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. According to the 2021 college rankings in the U.S. News & World Report, the university is ranked No. 7 academically out of 66 public regional universities in the western U.S.

Academics & Campus

Located in downtown San José, the main campus covers an area of 154 acres and is comprised of roughly 55 buildings. The on-campus housing community consists of six residence halls, which can accommodate a total of 4,350 students. SJSU has more than 450 recognized student organizations on its campus. This includes academic, honorary, cultural/religious, special interests, Greek life, and a large variety of club sports organizations.

SJSU grants bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in 250 areas of study. It offers 145 bachelor's and master's degrees, 108 concentrations, 5 credential programs, 19 concentrations, and 3 doctoral degrees.

There are nearly 36,000 students enrolled and attract students from throughout California, the U.S., and 100 countries. The student population is considered one of the most ethnically diverse in the United States. As of fall 2019, graduate students, Asian students, and international students were the most enrolled out of any campus in the CSU system. In 2008, San José State had the highest foreign student enrolment of all master's institutions in the nation, as reported by the Institute of International Education.

What is the history of San Jose State University?

Prior to the Civil War, San José State was established in 1857 and was founded by George W. Minns. It originated as the first State Normal School (aka Minns Evening Normal School), which prepared instructors who taught the youth of California. In 1972, the school was granted university status, and in 1974, the name was changed to San José State University.

What NCAA Sports do the Spartans Play?

The Spartans compete in the NCAA Division I FBS Mountain West Conference.

The Spartans' athletics program includes:

Women: basketball, beach volleyball, cross-country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, and tennis.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, soccer, track and field, and water polo.

The sports teams have won NCAA national titles in track and field, golf, boxing, fencing, and tennis. SJSU has also won 10 NCAA national Division I team championships as well as 50 NCAA national Division I individual champions. Go Blue & Gold!
