In Carbondale, Illinois, SIU is a public research university, and it is the oldest school in the Southern Illinois University system. SIU is ranked between "R2: Doctoral Universities -High research activity."

History

In 1869, the university was approved following the Act of the 26^th General Assembly of Illinois. It was founded as Southern Illinois Normal College, the second state-supported normal school in the state. In 1947, it was renamed Southern Illinois University.

Academics & Campus

SIU enrolls undergraduates from all 50 states of the U.S. as well as 100+ countries. The university offers three associate degree programs, 100 bachelor's degree programs, 73 master's degree programs, 36 Ph.D. degree programs, and professional degrees in architecture, law, and medicine. It is home to 600+ registered students organizations such as 11 fraternities, eight multicultural fraternities, and nine sororities.

Athletics –Salukis

The sports teams compete in the Missouri Valley Conference.

The Salukis' athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, track and field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, swimming and diving, and track and field.

The men's basketball team made six NCAA Tournament appearances. For the past two years, the softball team has been ranked in the Top 25 in the nation. It has also advanced to the NCAA Tournament for five straight seasons. Go Salukis!
