San Francisco State University (SFSU) is a public university in San Francisco. It is part of the 23-campus California State University system. According to the 2018 CollegeNET's Social Mobility Index university rankings, SFSU was ranked the 12^th top university in the U.S.

History

In 1899, a state-run normal school for teachers was founded. It obtained state college in 1921, and in 1972, gained university status as California State University, San Francisco. In 1974, it was renamed San Francisco State University.

Academics & Campus

The 141-acre campus is in the southwest part of the city, less than two miles from the Pacific coast. The university comprises six academic colleges: Business, Education, Ethnic Studies, Health and Social Sciences, Liberal & Creative Arts, and Science and Engineering. SFSU also has a College of Extended Learning.

San Francisco State University offers 118 bachelor's degrees, 94 master's degrees, 26 teaching credentials, and five doctoral degrees. It also provides three doctoral programs with partner schools University of California, Berkeley, and the University of California, San Francisco. The WASC Accrediting Commission accredits SFSU for Senior Colleges and Universities.

The most popular undergrad majors are Biology, Business Administration, Cinema, Communication Studies, Criminal Justice Studies, Engineering, English, Kinesiology, Psychology, and Sociology. In the fall of 2020, 27,075 students were enrolled. In addition, the university has the second-largest Asian and Filipino American enrollment percentage in the California State University system.

Athletics -Gators

The sports teams compete at the NCAA Division III level as members of the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

The Gators athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, track & field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, soccer, track & field, and wrestling.

The wrestling team sent a wrestler to a national championship meet from 1963-64 and 2016-17. In 2019, the Gators earned one NCAA Division II team championship. The Gators have also produced thirteen National Football League players. Go Purple & Gold!
