What is the History of Seton Hall University?

The Catholic university arose out of the Plenary Council of American Bishops, with the objective of bringing Catholicism to higher education in order to help spread the faith. In 1856, Newark Bishop James Roosevelt Bayley founded Seton Hall College, which was named after his aunt, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. The school was finally organized into a university in 1950.

Which NCAA Sports Do the Pirates Play?

The school's sports teams participate in the NCAA's Division I and in the Big East Conference.

The Pirates' athletics program includes:

Women: basketball, volleyball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, and tennis.

Men: basketball, baseball, cross country, golf, soccer, and swimming and diving.

Seton is nationally known for its highly successful men's basketball team, which has appeared in 13 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournaments and appeared in the final of the 1989 tournament. Go Pirates!
