St. Bonaventure University is a private Franciscan university in Allegany, New York. In 2019, the U.S. News & World Report was ranked No. 1 for best regional university values in the state of NY.

History

After gaining a land grant, financier Nicholas Devereux founded the town of Allegany and invited the Franciscan order for a new institution. Thus, in 1856, St. Bonaventure College was born. It was granted university status by New York State in 1950. The university is named in honor of Bonaventure, a cardinal and Doctor of the Church. Also, SBU is home to the Franciscan Institute, established in 1939 by Thomas Plassmann.

Academics & Campus

The 500-acre campus is in the town of Allegany, located just over the line from the city of Olean. In addition to the main campus, St. Bonaventure University operates a second graduate center in Hamburg, a soup kitchen called the Warming House, and the Motherhouse of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany. Roughly 25 miles from the campus, SBU runs a community called Mount Irenaeus, where students can experience the Franciscan eremitical tradition in the Allegheny Mountain foothills.

St. Bonaventure University has 50+ academic programs and is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the Middle States Association, and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. There are 2,381 students who study at SBU.

An on-campus organization called BonaResponds performs relief work at home and across the county. Students In Free Enterprise establishes successful business and education programs in the Bahamas. Some noteworthy alumni include Anthony Bannon, Ed Bastian, Jim Baron, and Miles Aiken.
