Samford University is a private Christian university in Homewood, Alabama. It is the 87th oldest institution of higher learning in the nation.

History

Howard College was founded in 1841 in Marion, Alabama after the Alabama Baptist State Convention wanted to make an institution for men in Perry County. Reverend James H. DeVotie donated some land and served on the Samford Board of Trustees for more than a decade. Julia Tarrant Barron and her son donated land and funds to establish the college.

The school was fully coeducational in 1913. Also, Howard hosted a V-12 Navy College Training Program during World War II. In 1961, the college obtained one of the oldest law schools in the U.S., Cumberland School of Law. After adding a new school of business in 1965, Howard College was reorganized and given university status. It was renamed Samford University in honor of Frank Park Samford.
