Sam Houston State University (SHSU) is a public university in Huntsville, Texas. It is the third-oldest public institution in Texas.

History

In 1879, Sam Houston Normal Institute was founded, becoming one of the first normal schools in the state as well as the first normal school west of the Mississippi River. It was created by legislation signed by Governor Oran M. Roberts and was dedicated to training teachers for Texas public schools. Following the year 1919, the university awarded bachelor's degrees. In 1936, it was awarded postbaccalaureate degrees for the first time. It finally became Sam Houston State University in 1969.

Academics & Campus

The main rural campus covers 316 acres and features a teaching and research farm, a body farm, a rodeo arena, a planetarium, a golf course, and an observatory. Sam Houston offers 88 undergraduate degree programs, 59 master's programs, 21 certificates, and eight doctoral programs.

The academic departments and programs are organized into eight colleges: College of Osteopathic Medicine, College of Health Sciences, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Science & Engineering Technology, College of Arts and Media, College of Education, College of Criminal Justice, and College of Business Administration.

SHSU enrolls 20,000 students and an additional 350+ high-achieving undergrads in the Elliot T. Bowers Honors College. The university is also a member of the Texas State University System. In addition, Sam Houston State is home to a lot of club sports such as basketball, baseball, martial arts, ultimate frisbee, lacrosse, rugby, volleyball, soccer, powerlifting, tennis, and more.

Athletics -Bearkats

The sports teams participate in NCAA Division I (FCS) in the Southland Conference.

The Bearkats athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, bowling, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, and track & field.

In 2020, the Bearkats won the NCAA Division I Football Championship. This was also the year that they went to the championship game for the third time. Go Orange & White!
