Sacred Heart University (SHU) is a private, Catholic university in Fairfield, Connecticut. It was the first Catholic university in the country to be staffed by the laity. SHU is also the second-largest Catholic university in New England.

History

In 1963, the Most Reverend Walter W. Curtis, Bishop of the Diocese of Bridgeport, CT, founded Sacred Heart University. The campus was located on the grounds of the former Notre Dame Catholic High School. The university was led and staffed by the laity, independent and locally oriented.

Academics & Campus

The main suburban campus is 150 miles southwest of Boston and 50 miles northeast of New York City. The additional campuses across the state include Center for Healthcare Education in Brideport; Griswold Campus in Griswold; Stamford Campus in Stamford; West Campus in Fairfield; and WSHU Broadcast Center in Fairfield. Sacred Heart also operates two study-abroad programs: the Luxembourg Campus in Luxembourg and Dingle, County Kerry Campus in Ireland.

International experiences are located at The American University in Rome, Italy; programs in Bermuda and the Bahamas; the University of Granada, Spain; and the University of Notre Dame in Fremantle, Australia. Students can also participate in CCIS programs in Argentina, Belgium, France, Germany, and Japan.

Sacred Heart University consists of five colleges and is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education. It offers 80+ degree programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. There are more than 8,500 students enrolled at SHU.

There are several activities on and off campus that the SHU community can join. For example, over 1,200 students volunteer annually within Bridgeport as well as regionally, nationally, and internationally. Sacred Heart hosts one local fraternity, two professional fraternities, five national fraternities, and nine national sororities. Almost 800 students participate in 32 NCAA athletic teams, and 500+ students participate in 23 club sports.
