Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) is a private research university in Troy, New York. It is the oldest technological university in the English-speaking world and is also classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities—Very High Research Activity.” In 2021, the U.S. News & World Report ranked RPI tied for 53rd among U.S. universities.

History

In 1824, Stephen Van Rensselaer established the Rensselaer School that resembled more of a graduate school than a college. The school was renamed the Rensselaer Institute eight years later as a small center for technological research. It was here that the first civil engineering degrees in the nation were granted in the year 1835. It was finally organized into a three-year polytechnic institute with six technical schools in 1850. The name was changed in 1861 to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Academics & Campus

The 265-acre campus sits on a hillside and overlooks the Hudson River. There are additional campuses in Hartford and Groton, Connecticut, that is mainly used by graduates and working professionals. RPI itself is organized into six main schools with 37 departments.

While the Institute emphasizes science and technology, it is recognized for its business and management, computing, design, engineering, information technology, liberal arts, and the sciences programs. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is a member of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities and the University and College Accountability Network.
