Rowan University is a public research university in Glassboro, New Jersey. It is ranked #2 in the U.S., according to the Social Mobility Index. The university is classified among R2: Doctoral Universities with High research activity.

History

The Glassboro Normal School was established in 1923 due to a shortage of trained teachers in the state. The school was built on 25 acres and funded by residents of the town. The land used to belong to the Whitney family, owners of the local glassworks during the 19^th century.

It became a four-year program in 1934 and was renamed three years later to The New Jersey State Teachers College at Glassboro and became co-educational. The college was one of the first in the U.S. to begin programs for teachers for reading disabilities and physical therapy.

After WWII, it was able to expand its enrollment and many new additional campuses and academic programs. As a result, it became Glassboro State College in 1958. After industrialist Henry M. Rowan, Jr. donated $100 million to the college, it was later renamed Rowan College of New Jersey in his honor. The college received university status in 1997.

Academics & Campus

The 800-acre suburban campus has 13 housing complexes and five affiliated housing units, which house more than 6,500 students. There is also a medical campus in Stratford as well as a medical and academic campus in Camden, New Jersey.

Within its 14 colleges and schools, Rowan provides 85 bachelor's, 46 master's, six doctoral degrees, and two professional degrees. As of 2017, 15,401 undergraduates and 2,045 graduate students were enrolled. More than 19,600 students represent 38 states and 34 countries.

Rowan University is home to 100+ clubs and organizations plus 30+ Greek organizations. It also has national award-winning programs, including the Rowan Democratic Club, the Rowan College Republicans, the Rowan Television Network, the Student University Programmers, and more.

Athletics -Profs

The sports teams are members of the NCAA in Division III and compete in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.

The Prof's athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, track & field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, soccer, swimming & diving, and track & field.

Nationally, the Profs have been moderately successful. The football team is a regular contender for the national title, with five appearances in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl along with five appearances in the national semifinals. In 2002, the women's field hockey team won the national championship and had a perfect season of 21 wins, and no losses. Go Brown & Gold!
