Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is a private research university in Rochester, New York. It is the tenth-largest private university in the country when it comes to enrollment. It is classified among “R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity.” RIT is also chartered by the New York state legislature and accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
In 1891, a merger between Rochester Athenæum and The Mechanics Institute created the institution called Rochester Athenæum and Mechanics Institute. In 1944, it was renamed Rochester Institute of Technology, becoming a full-fledged research university.
Academics & Campus
The main campus covers a 1,300-acre area and is covered with woodland and fresh-water swamp. It comprises 237 buildings with nine colleges. In 2009, the Sustainable Endowments Institute named the campus a “Campus Sustainability Leader”. In 2020, it was listed as a census-designated place.
In addition, RIT has three branch campuses in: East Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. It also has international partnerships with seven schools across the globe.
The university provides 200+ academic programs, which include seven doctoral programs. Rochester Institute of Technology is internationally famous for its art, computer, engineering, and science programs. It is also known for the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, with 1,000 deaf and hard-of-hearing students enrolled.
The student population is roughly 19,000 students, representing all 50 states and 100+ countries. RIT is home to the fourth oldest and one of the largest co-op programs worldwide. Also, RIT has more than 150 student clubs, 30 Greek organizations, ten major student organizations, club/intramural/pick-up sports, and a diverse interfaith center.

Athletics – Tigers
The sports teams compete at the Divison III level in the Liberty League. The men’s and women’s ice hockey teams play at the Division I level in the Atlantic Hockey conference.
The Tigers athletic teams include:
Women: basketball, crew, cross country, hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field, volleyball, and cheerleading.
Men: baseball, basketball, crew, cross country, hockey, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field, and wrestling.
In 2010, the men’s ice hockey team was the first Atlantic Hockey conference member to reach the NCAA tournament semi-finals. In 2011-12 the women’s ice hockey team won the NCAA Division III national championship. Go Tigers!
