Rider University is a private university in Lawrence Township, New Jersey. In 2016, the U.S. News & World Report ranked the university tied for 22nd in the Regional Universities North category.

History

Founded in 1865, Trenton Business College was established by Henry Beadman Bryant and Henry D. Stratton, who operate the Bryant and Stratton chain of private business schools. The first president,  Andrew J. Rider, owned 500 acres of cranberry bogs—hence the school colors cranberry and white. Women were admitted in 1896, and the same year, it was renamed Rider Business College.

In 1920, the institution officially became Rider College. Two years later, the New Jersey Board of Education granted the college the ability to confer Bachelor of Accounts and Bachelor of Commercial Science degrees. Liberal Studies and a Bachelor of Arts degree were introduced in 1957. Finally, in 1994, it became Rider University.

There are 4,825 students enrolled at Rider. The student body has access to twelve Greek organizations such as the Panhellenic Council, the Intercultural Greek Council, and the Interfraternity Council. Roughly 10% of the population participate in Rider’s two fraternities and four sororities.
