About Rice University Owls

William Marsh Rice University (aka Rice University) is a comprehensive private research university in Houston, Texas. According to the 2021 U.S. News & World Report, it was ranked tied at 16^th among national universities, 108^th among global universities, and 8^th for Best Value out of the U.S. universities.

Academics & Campus

RU is located on a 300-acre tree-lined campus near the Houston Museum District. It is organized into eleven residential colleges and eight schools. The university's undergraduate program offers over 50 majors, 24 minors, and multiple degree programs. In total, it has 360 degrees in over 60 departments, with 40 undergraduate degree programs, 51 master's programs, and 29 doctoral programs.

For fall 2020, Rice admitted 2,346 students. In 2019, their acceptance rate was a record low of 8.7%. The entire student population (approximately 6,740) represents all 50 states, the District of Columbia, two U.S. Territories, and 83 foreign countries. 40% of students are from Texas.

What is the History of Rice University?

The school's history started with the passing of Massachusetts businessman William Marsh Rice. In 1891, Rice made the decision to charter a free-tuition educational institute, named after him, to be built after his death. He specified that the institution was to be a competitive institution of the highest grade. In 1912, the university was created, fulfilling Rice's dying wishes.

Which NCAA Sports do the Owls Play?

The athletics at Rice play in NCAA Division I and participate in the Conference USA. RU is the second-smallest school competing in the NCAA Division I FBS football.

The Owls' athletics program includes:

Women: basketball, cross-country, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, tennis, and track and field.

Rice University has tremendous success in women's sports. In 2004-05, the women's volleyball, soccer, and basketball teams were sent to NCAA tournaments. The men's basketball team has won 10 conference titles. Go Blue & Grey!
