History

In 1929, a business professor and politician, Samuel W. Tator, founded the Connecticut College of Commerce. The co-founder, Phillip Troup, was also the first president. It only awarded associate’s degrees at first. In 1935, the college was renamed the Junior College of Commerce. During WWII, the college closed but soon reopened with a huge student body.

In 1951, it was changed to Quinnipiac College to honor the Quinnipiac Native American tribe that once inhabited Greater New Haven. That same year, the school offered bachelor’s degrees. During the 1970s, Quinnipiac offered master’s degrees. In 2000, the college finally became Quinnipiac University and was accredited by AACSB.
