Ohio University (OU) is a public research university in Athens, Ohio. It is the first university to be chartered in Ohio and by an Act of Congress. OU is the oldest university in the state, the tenth oldest public university in the nation, and the 32nd oldest among public and private universities. Additionally, the university is classified among R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity and accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

History

In 1787, the Congress of the Confederation chartered Ohio University and approved for the territory in 1802 and state in 1804. Manasseh Cutler first envisioned the university and founded it with Revolutionary War Brigadier General Rufus Putnam. The first two bachelor's degrees were granted in 1815.

Academics & Campus

The residential campus overlooks the Hocking River in Athens. It is ranked among the top 30 largest residential college campuses in the U.S. There are also five regional campuses: Chillicothe, Eastern, Lancaster, Southern, and Zanesville. OU has two educational centers and one extension campus.

The university is organized into twelve academic colleges, offering 250+ areas of undergraduate study, master's, and doctoral degrees. As of fall 2020, the total enrollment for all campuses was more than 30,000 students. In addition, Ohio University is home to 36 active club sports programs, including co-ed sports.

Athletics -Bobcats

The sports teams compete in the NCAA at the Division I level as charter members of the Mid-American Conference.

The Bobcats athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, track & field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, and wrestling.

In the 2019 season, the football team participated in 13 bowl games. The men's basketball team has made 14 appearances in the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship. Go Bobcats!
