Oakland University is a public research university in Auburn Hills and Rochester Hills, Michigan. It is classified among R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity and the second-largest university in the Detroit Metropolitan Area.

History

In 1908, John Francis Dodge and his wife Matilda bought Meadow Brook Farms. Twelve years later, following John's death, Matilda inherited his fortune and soon remarried Alfred G. Wilson, a lumber baron. They built Meadow Brook Hall in 1926-29.

In 1957, Matilda and Alfred donated their 1,433-acre estate to Michigan State University, and the Oakland branch was created. In 1963, it was renamed Oakland University, and it's been independent of Michigan State since 1970.

Academics & Campus

The campus encompasses 1,443 acres with trails, biking paths, and two nationally-ranked golf courses. In addition, there are over 3,000 students who live on campus in numerous student apartments and residence halls.

The main academic units of Oakland University are the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, the School of Health Sciences, Honors College, the School of Engineering and Computer Science, the School of Education and Human Services, the School of Business Administration, and the College of Arts and Sciences.

The university offers 132 bachelor's degree programs and 138 professional graduate certificates, master's degrees, and doctoral degree programs. The School of Business Administration is accredited by the AACSB-International accreditation in both business and accounting.

20,012 students are enrolled at Oakland. They have several options for campus life activities, including 200+ registered student organizations like Greek life, cultural and religious groups, as well as study abroad programs.

The sports teams are members of the Division I Horizon League.

The Golden Grizzlies athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field, volleyball, and dance.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming & diving, and track & field.

In 2007, the men's soccer team became the first Oakland team to move past the first round of their NCAA tournament. Go Black & Gold!
