Northwest Missouri State University is a public university in Maryville, Missouri.

History

In the year 1905, the Missouri Legislature designed five districts in the state to establish normal schools. Maryville founded the Fifth District Normal School with the mission to teach elementary school teachers. The school was able to grant baccalaureate in 1919, becoming Northwest Missouri State Teacher's College. In 1972, it was elevated to university status and changed to Northwest Missouri State University.

Academics & Campus

The university offers 40 graduate programs and 127 undergraduate programs. Most amount of students graduates from the business, education, geography, and agriculture departments. The Higher Learning Commission accredits Northwest.

With an enrollment of roughly 7,100 students, 50% of the population participates in at least one of the 150+ student organizations. These include a variety of interests like academic, multicultural, political, Greek life, honorary, performing, religious, sports, and so much more. In total, there are eight sororities and eight fraternities.

Famous alumni among NW Missouri are Jean Bartik, a member of the Women in Technology International Hall of Fame; Jason R. Brown, a Republican leader in the Missouri House of Representatives; and Pat Danner, a former U.S. representative from Missouri.

Athletics -Bearcats

The sports teams compete in the NCAA Division II and Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The Bearcats athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, tennis, and track & field.

The athletics program has won six NCAA Division II football national championships, three Universal Cheerleaders Association Division II National Champions, and three national Men's Basketball championships. Go Green & White!
