Northeastern State University (NSU) is a public university in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. It is the oldest institution of higher learning west of the Mississippi River and the oldest institution in the state.
The Cherokee Nation established the Cherokee National Female Seminary in 1851. In 1909, the State Legislature of Oklahoma passed an act to create Northeastern State Normal School for the training of teachers. The legislature purchased the building, land, and equipment of the Seminary from the Cherokee Tribal Government.
It was expanded to a full four-year curriculum in 1921, becoming Northeastern State Teachers College. During the 1950s, Northeastern became a comprehensive state college, offering baccalaureates in liberal arts as well as an addition of a fifth-year program to prepare master teachers for elementary and secondary schools. In 1985, the Oklahoma Legislature authorized renaming the institution Northeastern State University.
NSU opened its College of Optometry in 1979, making it one of 14 schools in the U.S. to offer a doctorate in that field. It was also the fourth-largest university in Oklahoma in the early 21st century.
