Northern Michigan University (NMU) is a public university in Marquette, Michigan. It is the largest university in the Upper Peninsula.

History

In 1899, the Michigan Legislature established Northern State Normal School to offer teacher preparation programs. The original campus site covered 20 acres and was donated by philanthropist and local businessman John M. Longyear. In 1963, a new state constitution in Michigan was adopted, and enrollment grew. In cooperation with the University of Michigan, courses were offered at the master’s degree level in 1935.

Academics & Campus

The campus comprises ten buildings, nine on-campus residence halls, four apartment buildings, and three distance learning facilities. NMU offers 180 undergraduate and graduate degree programs and has five academic divisions. It is accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

Additionally, Northern Michigan operates ten charter schools throughout the state: Bahweting Anishnabe Public School, Burton Glen Charter Academic, East Shore Leadership Academy, Experiencia Preparatory Charter Academy, Frances Reh Academy, George Crockett Academy, Nah Tah Wahsh Public School Academy, North Star Academy, Southpointe Scholars Charter Academy, and Walton Charter Academy.

NMU has an enrollment of roughly 8,000 students and hosts 300+ student organizations. These include academic, athletic, governmental, programs, social, and religious. Its non-NCAA varsity sports teams are: alpine skiing, esports, Greco-Roman wrestling, and weightlifting.
