Northern Kentucky University is a public university in Highland Heights, Kentucky. It is the third-largest university of Greater Cincinnati's four large universities and the youngest of Kentucky's eight.

History

In 1948, an extension campus for the University of Kentucky, the UK Northern Extension Center, was opened in Covington, Kentucky. Twenty years later, it became an autonomous four-year college named Northern Kentucky State College. In 1973, the college awarded its first bachelor's degrees, and three years later, Northern Kentucky was upgraded to university status.

Academics & Campus

The main campus is situated on 600+ acres in Highland Heights. There are seven colleges: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Education and Human Services, College of Health Professions, College of Informatics, Haile/US Bank College of Business, Honors College, Salmon P. Chase College of Law, and School of the Arts.

Primarily an undergraduate institution, NKU has more than 12,000 undergrads and almost 2,000 graduate students. Its student body is part of individual chapters and several honor societies. The Alpha Beta Phi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta and the International History Honor Society has won 18 best chapter awards.

Athletics -Norse

The sports teams joined the Horizon League in 2015 and were eligible for NCAA Division I championships in 2016-17.

The Norse athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, and track & field.

In 2017, the men's basketball team won the Horizon League and appeared in the NCAA tournament. Go Black & Gold!
