What is the History of Northern Illinois University?

The school opened its doors in 1899 as a teachers' school called the Northern Illinois State Normal School. Over the next 58 years, the institution and the governing board changed their names many times. In 1957, the 70^th General Assembly renamed the college Northern Illinois University in order to recognize its growing status as a liberal arts university.

Northern Illinois University is one of only 3 public universities in Illinois that compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association at Division I for all sports. Known as the Huskies, the athletic teams compete in the Mid-American Conference.

The Huskies' athletics program includes:

Women: basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Men: basketball, baseball, football, golf, soccer, tennis, and wrestling.

The baseball team has appeared in the NCAA Tournament twice, and the football team has won the National Championship once as well as 12 football conference titles. Go Huskies!
