The North Dakota University of Agriculture and Applied Sciences (NDSU) is a public land-grant research university that belongs to the North Dakota University System. It is considered to be one of the largest universities in the state and is ranked 127th out of 912 U.S. research universities. NDSU is classified among “R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity.”


The land-grant university, originally known as North Dakota Agricultural College, was established in 1890. NDAC continued to prosper and was eventually renamed North Dakota State University in 1960, following a statewide referendum.

Academics & Campus

NDSU is located in Fargo, North Dakota, and serves the state’s agricultural research extension centers classified across the region on 18,488 acres. The university consists of several campuses, with the main campus sitting on 258 acres of land and has over 100 major buildings.

In Fall 2019, the total enrollment was 13,173 students. The faculty consists of 59 program administrators and coaches; 204 extension educators, experiment station, and other researchers; 1,363 professional, technical, office, trades, and service staff.  As of 2020, North Dakota State offers 94 undergraduate majors, 146 undergraduate degree programs, 5 undergraduate certificate programs, 84 undergraduate minors, 87 master’s degree programs, 52 doctoral degree programs, and 21 graduate certificate programs.

NDSU is an essential part of the Red River Valley Research Corridor, and according to the NSF Higher Education and Research Development survey, it is ranked in the top 100 research agricultural sciences and social science. It is also listed in the National Science Foundation at 95 among 404 public universities.

Athletics –Bison

NDSU athletes are known as the North Dakota State Bison, or simply, The Bison, or “The Thundering Herd.” North Dakota State’s intercollegiate sports teams participate in the NCAA Division I in all sports and is a member of the North Central Conference.

The Bison’ athletics program includes:

Women: basketball, volleyball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, and track and field.

Men: basketball, cross country, football, golf, hockey, tennis, and track and field.

The football team has won 16 NCAA National titles, and the women’s basketball team has won 5 NCAA National Championships. Go Green & Yellow!
