Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) is a public university in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. It is a member of the Tennessee Board of Regents and the State University and Community College System of Tennessee. The university is authorized by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission. According to the 2009 edition of Forbes magazine, MTSU was ranked amongst the top 100 public universities of the nation.

History

In 1855, a politician from Wilson County, Tennessee, called for a normal school after education efforts collapsed post-American Civil War. Later, the General Education Bill of 1909 allowed the establishment of three normal or teacher-training institutions. Middle Tennessee State Normal School was founded in 1911 with a two-year program for training teachers. By 1925, it evolved into a four-year teachers' college with the ability to grant the Bachelor of Science degree. The school advanced to university status in 1965 and was officially renamed Middle Tennessee State University.

Academics & Campus

The main campus covers a 466-acre area and consists of 234 buildings which include 12 residence halls, two apartment complexes, and nine colleges. MTSU offers more than 300-degree programs and over 35 degree programs. It is prominently recognized for its Recording Industry, Aerospace, Music, Concrete, and Industry Management programs.

The undergraduate enrollment for the 2018-19 semester was 18,001 students. Middle Tennessee State University hosts roughly 340 student organizations, fraternities, and interest groups. About 5% of men and 9% of women are active in the Greek system.

Athletics –Blue Raiders

The sports teams play in NCAA's Division I as members of the Conference USA.

The Blue Raiders' athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, cross-country, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, football, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross-country.

The university has won two national championships in golf and men's tennis. The football team won the Sun Belt Championship twice and has participated in twelve bowl games. The baseball team has sixteen conference titles and fourteen NCAA tournament appearances.
