Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) is a public university in Moorhead, Minnesota. It is part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. In 2008, TIME magazine rated the university the 18th top liberal arts college in the Midwest.

History

In 1885, the Minnesota State Legislature planned for a new state normal school in the Red River Valley. State Senator Solomon Comstock proposed the bill and funded the Moorhead Normal School, which opened in 1888.

In 1921, the State permitted the school to offer the four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Education. It then became Moorhead State Teachers College to educated high school teachers in northwest Minnesota.

During WWII, Moorhead trained aviation students as per a contract with the Army Air Corps. In 1946, the college offered a Bachelor of Arts degree, and in 1953, it had graduate programs. By 1957, the school was renamed Moorhead State College.

As the school increased its number of programs, the State Legislature granted the school university status in 1975 under the name Moorhead State University. In 1995, the university became part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. The Board of Trustees requested to rename the school to Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2000.
