Mount St. Mary's University (The Mount) is a Catholic liberal arts university close to Emmitsburg, Maryland. According to the U.S. News and World Report's Best Colleges 2015, it was named one of the top 25 best regional universities.

History

In 1805, French émigré Father John DuBois bought land on St. Mary's Mountain and built Saint-Mary's-on-the-Hill church. It was completed in 1807, and Father DuBois opened a boarding school for kids. The beginning of Mount St. Mary's officially began in 1808, when the Society of St. Sulpice transferred its students to Emmitsburg.

The small group of faculty members was driven to offer a full high school and college course for students and potential priests. As a result, Mount St. Mary's was transformed into one of the most important ecclesiastical institutions of the country. The first charter was obtained in 1830 for a university. Mount St. Mary's operated as a boarding school in the early 1900s. It didn't become Mount Saint Mary's University until 2004.

Academics & Campus

The 1,600+-acre campus has a pleasant rural mountain view and includes the second largest Catholic seminary in the nation. Students live in five residence halls and three apartment buildings. The undergraduate university comprises three schools: The School of Natural Science and Mathematics, the Richard J. Bolte School of Business, and the College of Liberal Arts.

The Mount offers 40+ majors, minors, concentrations, and special programs. It also provides eight master's degree programs and six postgraduate certificate programs. The university enrolled 2,240 students in 2014-15. The separated Mount Saint Mary's Seminary enrolls 150+ residential seminarians each year.

Athletics -Mountaineers

The sports teams participate in NCAA Division I as members of the Northeast Conference.

The Mountaineers athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, bowling, cross country, golf, lacrosse, rugby, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field, and water polo.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field, water polo.

In 1962, the men's basketball team won the Division II championship at the NCAA Men's Division II Basketball Tournament. The first Mount Saint Mary's win in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament was in 2008. Go, Mountaineers!
