Minnesota State University, Mankato (aka MSU, MNSU, or Minnesota State) is a public university in Mankato, Minnesota. It is the second-largest university in the state and the second-oldest member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system.

 

History 

In 1858, MNSU was established as the Second State Normal School. It was designated in Mankato in 1866 and opened as Mankato Normal School. By 1957, the mission of the institution had grown into a comprehensive four-year college education. By the 1960s, the college had grown so fast and so large that there was a bill created in the State Legislature to designate it as the University of Southern Minnesota. Later, it was renamed Minnesota State University.

 

Academics & Campus

Minnesota State campus currently covers 30 buildings with 303 acres of area. The on-campus housing contains dorms for 3,000 residents. As of Fall 2012, there were 14,000+ students enrolled. There are more than 200 academic student groups: intramural sports, leadership and religious organizations, honorary and professional fraternities and sororities, and special interest groups. In addition to the main campus, it operates 2 satellite campuses: one in Edina and the other in Owatonna.

 

The university is organized into 8 colleges and offers 130 undergrad programs of study, 13 preprofessional programs, 4 doctoral programs, and 75 graduate programs. It also has an online learning campus that offers both undergraduate and graduate programs of study. With its quality education, it is one of the top producing universities in the country of its kind that participates in the Fulbright Scholar program. It has produced 8 Student awards in the past 10 years and over 37 Fulbright Scholars in the past 30 years.

Athletics –Mavericks

More than 600 student-athletes participate in MSNU’s sports teams. Most of the teams compete at the NCAA Division II level in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The men’s and women’s ice hockey teams compete at the Division I level in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
 

The Mavericks’ athletics program includes:
 

Women: basketball, cross country, golf, hockey, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

 

Men: basketball, baseball, football, golf, hockey, wrestling, track and field, and cross country.

 

Minnesota State has won 6 team and 49 individual national championships. All of the teams combined have won the NSIC US Bank All-Sports Award 4 times. Since 1993, the Mavericks have been awarded the most National Championships out of all 16 colleges and universities in the NSIC. Go Purple & Gold!
