Millikin University is a private university in Decatur, Illinois.

History

In 1901, the well-known Decatur businessman James Millikin founded the school. He is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church and continued his banking business following the founding of the university. Mr. Millikin's vision for the university was that it would embrace the ‘practical' side of learning along with the ‘literary and classical.' He also wanted it to be open to all religions. Millikin University has since become one of the first small, comprehensive universities in the nation.

Academics & Campus

The university is independent and privately funded with traditional and non-traditional undergrad and graduate degree programs. There are three professional schools on the 75-acre city campus. Approximately 2,000 undergraduates and 90 postgraduates are enrolled.

The most popular majors include: Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services; Education; Health Professions and Related Programs; Parks, Recreation, Leisure and Fitness Studies; and Visual and Performing Arts. Since 1914, Mercer has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

Athletics -The Big Blue

The sports teams are a member of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

The Big Blue athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track & field, triathlon, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, swimming, tennis, track & field, volleyball, and wrestling.

In 2004-05, the women's basketball team won the national championship. The men's swimming team has won four individual championships. Go Blue & White!
