Michigan Technological University (MTU) is a public research university in Houghton, Michigan. MTU is classified among R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity.

History

The Michigan Mining School was founded in 1885 in order to train mining engineers to operate the local copper mines. A politician and judge, Jay Abel Hubbell, donated land for the school's buildings. It was the first post-secondary institution in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In 1964, the school became Michigan Technological University.

Academics & Campus

The 925-acre main campus sits on a bluff overlooking Portage Lake. The university is divided into five colleges and schools: Sciences and Arts; Forest Resources and Environmental Science; Engineering; Computing; and Business.

MTU offers 130+ degree programs, including 125 undergraduate degree programs and 75 graduate degree programs. As of fall 2019, the engineering program accounts for 63% of enrollment. The student population consists of 7,000+ students.

Michigan Technological University recognizes over 200 student organizations such as several small interest groups, Greek Life, Senior Design, and the Enterprise Program. It is home to twelve fraternities and seven sororities.

Athletics -Huskies

The sports teams compete in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The men's hockey team competes in Division I as a member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

The Huskies athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, skiing, soccer, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.

Men: basketball, cross country, football, hockey, skiing, tennis, and track & field.

The men's hockey team has won three national championships. In 2011, the women's basketball team was the national runner-up. Go Huskies!
