McNeese State University is a public university in Lake Charles, Louisiana. It is part of the University of Louisiana System and is classified as a Master's University.

History

In 1939, Lake Charles Junior College was founded and only offered the first two years of higher education. It became an autonomous four-year institution in 1950 and was named McNeese State College, after John McNeese, an early local educator. However, the present-day name wasn't adopted until 1970.

Academics & Campus

The 121-acre campus is lined with oak trees in the heart of South Lake Charles. The university also owns a 65-acre Athletic plant, Burton Coliseum, a 503-acre McNeese Farm, the Louisiana Environmental Research Center, and nearly 1,600 acres of farm property for farming, ranching, and research.

Occupying 68 buildings, McNeese State consists of six colleges as well as the Doré School of Graduate Studies. The university offers 83 degree programs and is the first university in the state to provide a concentration in forensic chemistry. McNeese is also one of the first schools in the nation to offer a concentration in preparedness, security, and terrorism. McNeese State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. There are 7,626 students enrolled.

Athletics -Cowboys and Cowgirls

The sports teams participate in NCAA Division I (FCS I-AA) in the Southland Conference.

The Cowboys and Cowgirls athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, and track & field.

The football team played in the inaugural Independence Bowl game in 1976 and had two more appearances in 1979 and 1980. They have also played in two Division I-AA Finals. In 1956, the men's basketball team made the only appearance in the NAIA Division I Men's Tournament. Go Blue & Gold!
