What is the Historyof Marshall University?

Marshall was founded by residents of Guyandotte and the surrounding area as a private subscription school in 1837. It was titled after the fourth Chief Justice, John Marshall. A year later, the institution was dedicated by the Virginia General Assembly as Marshall Academy, and it was renamed Marshall College in 1858.

Which NCAA Sports do the Thundering Herd Play?

Marshall competes in NCAA Division I (FBS) as a member of Conference USA.

The Thundering Herd athletics program includes:

Women: basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, and soccer.

The men's soccer team has a record of 32-22-8 with one conference championship and a third-round finish in the College Cup. The softball team has made two NCAA Tournament appearances.
