Marist College is a private liberal arts college in Poughkeepsie, New York. In 2017, the U.S. News & World Report ranked the college 9th in the category “Regional Universities (North).”

History

In 1905, members of the Marist Brothers went to the Mid-Hudson Valley to establish the first Marist house of studies in the U.S. They named the property and building “Saint Ann’s Hermitage” to honor Champagnat’s Hermitage in France. The school trained young men for a life of “study, work, prayer, and service.”

In 1929, it was accredited by the state to offer a variety of degrees in the arts and sciences. At this time, the training center had been transformed into the Marist Normal Training School and offered college-level courses. In 1946, New York granted the institution an official four-year college charter, and the school was renamed Marian College. Women were admitted to classes in 1968.

Ownership of the college was passed on in 1969 to the Marist College Educational Corporation due to the institution’s rapid growth and because laws regulated federal aid to religiously affiliated educational institutions in the state.

Academics & Campus

The 180-acre main campus overlooks the Hudson River and rests along the east banks. Marist also owns the 60-acre Payne Estate on the west bank of the Hudson River in a town called Esopus. Additionally, there is Marist Executive Center in midtown Manhattan and a branch campus in Florence, Italy. On-campus living comprises four standard, hall-style dormitory buildings for all freshman students. Upper-level students have access to townhouses and apartment facilities.

Marist College offers 44 Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees, 21 certificate programs, and 12 master’s degrees. The college is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. There are 6,657 students enrolled. In addition, Marist is home to 93 registered clubs and organizations that cover several interests such as performing arts, politics, sports, student government, and religion.
