About University of Lynchburg Hornets

Academics & Campus

Located about 180 miles southwest of Washington D.C., in the Central Virginia foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the university occupies 250 acres. What is the History of University of Lynchburg?

Established in 1903, Dr. Josephus Hopwood founded Virginia Christian College as a selective, independent, co-ed, and residential institution. It was renamed from Lynchburg College to the University of Lynchburg in 2018.

Which NCAA Sports do the Hornets Play?

The sports teams compete in NCAA Division III and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Approximately 500 student-athletes participate in varsity athletics, which is about 25% of the student population.

The Hornets' athletics program includes:

Women: basketball, cheer, cross-country, equestrian, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cheer, cross-country, equestrian, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, and track and field.

The Hornets have participated in three-team national championships. In 2014, the women's soccer program won its first-ever team national championship. Go Red & White!
