About Liberty University Flames

Liberty University is a private evangelical Christian university and is one of the largest evangelical Christian universities in the world and one of the largest non-profit universities in the U.S. It is also the 7^th largest four-year university and the largest university in Virginia. Liberty is authorized by the SACS to award associate, bachelor's, master's, specialist, and doctoral degrees. Academics & Campus

The university enrolls 15,000+ students at its Lynchburg campus and 94,000 students in online courses, making the total enrollment of approximately 110,000. All of the students combined represent 50 states, Washington DC, and 86 countries. There are over 30,000 military students and over 850 international students that attend. The on-campus students have access to over 100 registered clubs.

LU consists of 17 colleges and the campus covers over 7,000 acres. It consists of 350+ buildings and more than 200 classrooms. Studies at the university have a conservative Christian orientation, with 3 required Bible-studies classes for undergrads. In total, LU offers over 500 total programs, 366 on-campus and 289 online. There are 144 graduate programs and 4 doctoral programs offered on campus. It is classified as a doctoral research university with moderate research activity by the Carnegie Classification and is recognized by the NSA and the Department of Homeland Security as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education.

What is the History of Liberty University?

LU was founded in 1971 in Lynchburg, Virginia. One of the founders, Jerry Falwell, was a pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church and served as the first president of the school. Initially named Lynchburg Baptist College, the school changed its name to Liberty Baptist College in 1977, and finally to Liberty University in 1985. Falwell wanted to use the name Liberty in order to take advantage of the 1976 Bicentennial of the United States.

The Liberty Flames and Lady Flames compete in Division I of the NCAA and are members of the Atlantic Sun Conference for 17 of its 20 varsity sports.

The Flames' athletics program includes:

Women: basketball, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, and track and field.
