Lehigh University (LU) is a private research university in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. It is classified among R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity. According to the U.S. News & World Report, LU is tied for 49^th among national universities.

History

In 1865, Asa Packer, businessman and founder of the Lehigh Valley Railroad donated $500k to create a new university. He wanted to help educate the young men of the Lehigh Valley and serve intellectual and moral improvement. Since 1971-72, the undergraduate programs have been coeducational.

Academics & Campus

The 2,350-acre campus includes 180 acres of recreational and playing fields plus 150 buildings. It is organized into three campuses on and around South Mountain: The Asa Packer Campus, the Murray H. Goodman Campus, and the Mountaintop Campus.

The university has five colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education, the College of Education, and the P.C Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science. There is 35% of the student body studying at the College of Arts and Sciences.

As of 2019, 5,047 undergrads and 1,802 graduate students are enrolled. Roughly 34% of undergraduates participate in Greek life. There are 13 fraternities, eight sororities, and 31 social fraternities and sororities, as well as several professional and honor fraternities and sororities.

The sports teams are a member of the Patriot League.

The Mountain Hawks athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field, and wrestling.

In 2002, Lehigh won the inaugural USA Today NCAA Foundation Award for having the top graduation rate of all Division I institutions in the nation. Alumni have gone on to professional careers in Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, the National Football League, and Major League Soccer. Graduates have also competed in the Super Bowl as well as won gold medals at the Olympics. Go Brown & White!
