Lamar University (LU) is a public university in Beaumont, Texas. Since 1995, it has been a Texas State University System member and used to be a flagship institution of the former Lamar University System. In 2015, the U.S. News & World Report ranked Lamar in Tier Two of “National Universities.”

History

Louis R. Pietzch established a public junior college in Beaumont’s South Park and called it South Park Junior College. It became the first college in the state to receive approval from the Texas Department of Education. In 1925, it was fully accredited, and in 1932, it was renamed Lamar College after the second president of the Republic of Texas, Mirabeau B. Lamar.

The enrollment increased thanks to the end of World War II. In 1949, Governor Beauford Jester signed the bill creating Lamar State College of Technology. Master’s degrees were finally offered in 1960 in many different fields. In 1969, the college opened its first branch at a center in Orange, Texas. It offered its first doctoral program in 1970, and a year later, the school was officially named Lamar University.

Academics & Campus

Within its seven colleges, LU offers eight doctoral degree programs, 50 master’s, and 96 undergraduate programs. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and is classified as a Doctoral Research University by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

In southwest China, Lamar and Kunming University of Science and Technology have an exchange program for Chinese students. The university also provides secondary education through three sources.

In fall 2020, the enrollment was 17,488 students. LU boasts 19 national fraternities and sororities.
