La Salle University is a private, Catholic university in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

History

Founded in 1863, La Salle College was an all-male college established by Brother Teliow and Archbishop James Wood of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. It was named in honor of St. Jean-Baptiste de La Salle. The school was nearly bankrupt in the 1930s, and it almost closed down. However, a 75th Anniversary Fund Drive in 1938 raised enough funds to enable La Salle to purchase a piece of land.

During World War II, the lack of students almost closed the school again, but there was a period of growth in the late 1940s. There were numerous new buildings constructed, such as a science building, a student union, and a library. In 1970, La Salle admitted women, finally becoming a fully co-ed institution. In 1984, it was granted university status.

Academics & Campus

The urban campus spans a 130-acre area and is located on Belfield, the former estate of the Revolutionary War patriot and famous painter Charles Willson Peale. Within the university is the College of Professional and Continuing Studies, School of Arts & Sciences, School of Business Administration, and School of Nursing & Health Sciences. The largest majors at La Salle University are communication, education, and nursing.

In 2018, undergraduate enrollment declined to 3,900 students. In 2012, there were 4,500+ undergrads. The university is home to several organizations. There is a cable TV educational-access station, a student-run radio station, a student-run weekly newspaper, and 100+ clubs, intramurals, and NCAA Division I sports teams. La Salle also has six chartered fraternities and six sororities. Additionally, it offers two co-ed fraternities: a business fraternity and a community service fraternity.
