Jackson State University (JSU) is a public historically black university in Jackson, Mississippi. It is the fourth-largest university in the state and one of the largest HBCUs in the country. It is classified among “R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity” and a Thurgood Marshall College Fund member.

 

History 

Natchez Seminary was established in 1877 and was affiliated with the American Baptist Home Mission Society of New York. The school changed its name to Jackson College in 1833 and moved from Natchez to Jackson, Mississippi. In 1934, The Baptist Society withdrew financial support and became a state-supported public institution in 1940. It became known as the Mississippi Negro Training School and finally changed to Jackson State University in 1974.

 

Academics & Campus

The main campus covers a 245-acre area and contains 50+ academic and administrative buildings. The university has the following satellite campuses throughout the metropolitan area: Downtown, Holmes, Madison, Mississippi E-Center, and Universities Center.

 

JSU has seven colleges and schools, such as the College of Business, College of Education and Human Development, College of Liberal Arts, College of Health Sciences, College of Science, Engineering & Technology, W.E.B. Du Bois—Maria Luisa Alvarez Harvey Honors College, and School of Life Long Learning.

 

In fall 2019, 7,020 students were enrolled. There is 75% of the student population from Mississippi. There is also representation from Illinois, Louisiana, and Tennessee. The highest number of international students are from China. Jackson State offers 100+ registered student organizations, including academic, residential, religious, Greek, and special interest groups.

Athletics – Tigers

The sports teams participate in NCAA Division I as a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference and the Division I Football Championship Subdivision.

 

The Tigers athletic teams include:

 

Women: basketball, bowling, cheerleading, cross country, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.

 

Men: baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, football, tennis, and track & field.

 

In 2007, the football team won the SWAC Championship. The men’s basketball team has five appearances in the NCAA tournament, and as of 2015, they are ranked 4th in the SWAC for the number of NCAA appearances. The men’s and women’s golf teams have arguably dominated the SWAC championships with a total of 18 consecutive championship wins, 21 wins for men, and nine wins for women. Go Navy & White!
