James Madison University (JMU, Madison, or James Madison) is a public research university in Harrisonburg, Virginia. According to the 2019 U.S. News & World Report rankings, JMU is the No. 2 public masters-level institution in the South and 8th among master’s universities in the nation.




It was established in 1908 as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg. It was renamed Madison College in 1938 in honor of President James Madison. In 1977, it was changed again to James Madison University.


Academics & Campus


Located in Shenandoah Valley, west of Massanutten Mountain, the campus of JMU consists of 148 major buildings on 721 acres. It has become Virginia’s second-most photographed location across social media sites. The university has 7 colleges and 35 residence halls, which include 10 sorority houses.


Along with 350 clubs and organizations, the school also offers 115 degree programs and 78 academic programs. According to the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, James Madison University is considered “most selective.” The entering freshman class for the 2012-13 academic year was 4,325 students. Approximately 38% of students are from out of state, representing all 50 states and 89 countries.

Athletics –Dukes


James Madison competes in the NCAA Division I as members of the Colonial Athletic Association and the Eastern College Athletic Conference. The Dukes are named after Samuel Page Duke, the second president for JMU.


The Dukes’ athletics program includes:


Women: basketball, cross-country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer, and tennis.

The women’s basketball team won a program record of 29 games. The baseball team was the first Virginia school to advance to the College World Series in 1983. The football team won the NCAA Division I-AA national title two times. Go Purple & Gold!
